What is Cayenne Bors?
Cayenne Bors is not a pepper as its name implies, but rather a spicy chili pepper. The name is likely a remnant of a historical English-Hungarian translation error, since the English word "pepper" can mean both pepper and paprika in Hungarian. It's a type of chili pepper belonging to the flowering plant family, closely related to bell peppers and jalapenos.
Originally cultivated in Central and South America until the 15th century, it was then brought to Europe by Columbus. Cayenne peppers boast impressive nutritional value, containing numerous antioxidants. Due to its capsaicin content, it's classified among moderately spicy chili peppers, typically ranging from 30,000 to 50,000 SHU on the Scoville scale.
When ripe, Cayenne peppers are typically 10-25 cm long, usually thin, mostly red, with often curved tips and a wavy exterior. Some varieties can be yellow or purple.
Uses of Cayenne Bors
Cayenne pepper is generally used in processed form, either dried or ground into a powder. It is a key component in spice blends. Unlike other chili powders, Cayenne powder is made solely from Cayenne peppers, whereas chili powder often combines various chili peppers and may include other spices. Due to its spiciness, it should be added carefully to strong, spicy sauces, stews, soups, pickles, and marinades.
