The Trinidad Moruga Scorpion, with its impressive 2,009,231 SHU rating, ranks as the second hottest chili pepper in the world. Its name is inspired by the small tail at the end of the fruit, reminiscent of a scorpion's tail.
Many hot chilis are named after their regions of origin. This particular pepper is native to the Moruga district in Trinidad. In 2012, it held the title of the world's hottest chili pepper, but subsequent experiments led to its dethroning by the Carolina Reaper, which boasts a much higher SHU value. The previous record holder was the Indian Bhut jolokia.
